By connecting ROSIDS to an aerial antenna or satellite feed, the system processes intercepted TV, radio and Internet broadcasts from satellite signals and produces video streams with subtitles.
Based on automatic speech recognition, ROSIDS converts the audio data into text and provides a machine translation from the original into a chosen language, fully automatically and in real-time. The translated transcripts are displayed together with the original broadcast enabling users to watch, for example, AlJazeera with English subtitles.
The original deployment scenario of ROSIDS was to make open source intelligence available on military ships to support informed, off-shore decision-making. Another typical application area is the Situation Room, a 24-hour watch and alert center at military and governmental headquarters and large corporations, providing chief executives and national security advisors with current intelligence and open source information, which enables them to respond to problems in a timely manner.
